THC-molekyylin ”keksijä” Raphael Mechoulam

sunnuntai 9. marraskuuta 2008

Lyhyt haastattelu vuonna 1985

Haastattelu alkaa sivulla riviltä ”Interview with Professor Raphael Mechoulam, Codiscoverer of THC”. Raphael Mechoulam:

Probably the major barrier has been the unwillingness, or fear, by companies to develop drugs that are based on cannabis. They are afraid, as I said before, of notoriety. They were afraid that they would get into a jam of sorts. So for the first ten years after our discoveries, essentially no work has been done whatsoever on the pharmaceutical properties of cannabis. Even afterwards the work that was done, was done very, very timidly and very slowly. Even when work done at a scientific level it was stopped at the corporate-administrative level.

Haastattelu vuodelta -94

Raphael Mechoulam tutkijakollegoineen (mm. tohtori William Devane) löysi elimistön tuottaman anandamidiksi nimetyn endokannabinoidin vuonna 1992. PMID: 1470919

Lainaus haastattelusta:

Anandamides and THC have more or less the same affinity for the receptor. There are synthetic cannabinoids which are a hundred and maybe a thousand times more active than THC. But that is irrelevant, THC and anandamide are not very potent, but then the body does not want very potent compounds. It wants compounds with intermediate potency, because if the potency is very high and there is a chance increase of the compound the body will go into stress. Changes in the body are usually gradual so one does not need very active compounds in the body.

Artikkeli helmikuulta v. 2003, haastattelussa Raphael Mechoulam ja Herbert Schuel

Herbert Schuel on anatomian ja solubiologian emeritusprofessori Buffalon yliopistossa. Artikkelissa kerrotaan mm. anandamidin (endokannabinoidien) ja kannabinoidien suhteesta. Lainaus:

But testing a human to see if their anandamide levels are correct would require a painful spinal tap to find the specific enzyme produced by the body’ s breakdown of anandamides, which is why today’s research remains confined to rats, mice and sea urchins.

”We can’t do that painful procedure (to humans) just for research,” Mechoulam said.

MS-potilas pohtii: MS-taudin diagnosoinnin yhteydessä tehdään tavallisesti vähintään yksi selkäydinpunktio. Samalla selkäydinnesteestä voitaisiin selvittää elimistön endokannabinoidien taso ja sitä kautta ulkoisen kannabinoidilääkityksen tarve mm. keskushermoston suojaukseen.

Raphael Mechoulam puhuu mm. kannabinoidijärjestelmän roolista hermoston suojauksessa tässä YouTube-videossa (pituus 9:59) vuodelta 2004.

Mechoulamin haastattelu 4/2006

Lainaus haastattelusta:

If you take a mouse and cause slight damage to the skull of the mouse, or even to the brain, and if you leave the mouse it will recover within thirty days. But if you look at the brains of the mice you find that at least one of the endocannabinoids goes up one thousand percent, so we thought that maybe they have a neuroprotective role.

Mechoulam kertoo kannabinoidien roolista mm. neuroprotektiossa, syöpäkasvainten hoidossa, kivunhallinnassa, ja paljon muuta mielenkiintoista mm. siitä, miksi endokannabinoideja ei käytetä eikä edes tutkita terapeuttisina aineina. Artikkelista löytyy myös suomennettu versio.

Haastattelu helmikuulta 2007

Tämä haastattelu on annettu sen jälkeen, kun Mechoulam sai elämäntyöstään tunnustukseksi European College of Psychopharmacologyn Lifetime Achievement Award -palkinnon.

Conversation with Raphael Mechoulam. 6/2007

We decided to name the new brain-derived ligand anandamide. Bill was learning Sanscrit at the time and suggested ”ananda” (supreme joy in this ancient tongue).

Pitkä haastattelu; suosittelen.

Pitkän iän salaisuus? ;)

Lähes 80-vuotias Raphael Mechoulam on edelleen hyvässä kunnossa ja järki on veitsenterävä. Kannabistutkimuksen ja kannabisaktivismin saralla on enemmänkin vanhoja herroja, kuten vaikkapa Harvardin emeritusprofessori tohtori Lester Grinspoon ja kannabisaktivisti Jack Herer.
