  Breeder's Description - 'Ice'

With Ice we have successfully attempted to bring quality and quantity together. Ice has ancestors of Afghani, a very special Skunk, Northern Light, and Shiva. An intense selection process of thousands of plants was used in finding this special mix. Ice flowers are richly covered in trychomes and have a dense consistency. Buds form along main branches and there is a high flower to leaf ratio. Fantastic for hydro and soil applications. The stone is heavy and the aroma is almost like fuel. Ice is a winner of the 1998 Cannabis Cup.

These are my observations of "Ice" from Nirvana seeds....

Plant size and formation
...500-600 mm high, about the same in width.. large leaves (one resembled more indica) very long stems on the leaves , keeping them from covering any bud sites , very fast grower , fills out to very well shaped plant with many bud sites and medium to large buds

Yield...
Very good, 135 grams dry on the best yielding plant of the 4 females I grew; the lowest was just less than 100 grams...

Maturing time... (Outdoors)
From seed to harvest total of around 77 days , a few took about 10 days more, she grew very quickly and showed sex in the first few weeks , I was impressed to see that it had the vigor to still form a good size plant , actual flowering days were hard to count , but were noticeably quick ..

Bud size and form…
... Nice tight bud formation, dark golden/green in colour, very frosty...Were up to 3 inches in diameter on first plant harvested, slightly larger on the plant with the looser buds ..
Uniformity..
Out of 4 females they were all slightly different, wasn’t a bother due to the high quality and pleasant smells they all exhibited.. 2 were similar in look and smell , with slight variations , and the other 2 were quite different to all , a sweeter , slightly looser bud (probably the best yielder but suffered mould ) , one of the sweeter plants seemed to more resemble an indica in leaf shape and bud form , had a very bubble gummy smell ..

Smell and taste
... Pleasant "skunky smell”, taste was very similar to super skunk i recently harvested, quite bitey with a strong aftertaste ...an elusive perfumy taste ...

Stoned..
strong stoned , much in the head , comes on fast, can also feel it in my arms - little numb ,sort of buzzy feeling , nice ..

well that’s how she performed folks , i enjoyed the grow , the smoke was memorable , with the indica pheno being the strongest overall ,would definitely try again , a great performer ..
... Total yield from the 4 plants was 415 grams thereabouts, will keep the wolf from the door for a few weeks id say...

I had two distinct phenotypes:

The first was was more Sativa influenced and was a harder to contain in my small flower space. Would have done much better outside. Flowers were very large but the bottom 1/4 of the flower was strechy.

The second was more Indica influenced that took *very* well to being tied down. I created a bonsai plant in 1gal pots thats main stem was no taller than my hand, but produced 1.5ozs. The buds had hints of purple flowers within the bud itself and a sweet smelly of berries. Very nice.

Both phenotypes had a similar high, a delayed rush that wasn't all in your face, but isn't a creeper. Really heady, but social high I couldn't stop talkin! Great for parties, concerts, or other gatherings.

I grew Ice from clone. IMO this strain was very sensitive to wind and nutes.
My problems with this plant grew so big that I had to cut her down on day 31 of bloom. She still produced a lot of resin and some nice buds.

Ice is one of my faves. It produces so many resin glands that the plant is completely covered. The high is nice and uplifting and will not turn you into a couch potato. Ice is good to smoke before doing something active like biking or hiking. The high creeps up on you after smoking ... you might end up smoking 3 bowls before you realize how stoned you really are. The smell of the plant while flowering is amazing: very sweet smelling with undertones of skunk. This smell intensifies with curing.

The plant seems to really use up the nitrogen during flowering. I had this problem more when using chem ferts. About halfway through flower it would go very yellow. During veg feed heavy with nitrogen but do not and feed veg nutes until the second week of flower and you shouldn't have this problem.

Started out with 5 seeds, 100% germ rate!

Seedlings were vegged for about 6 weeks and then put into 12/12. In about the 4th or 5th week of Veg there was a strong odor though, so Carbon scrubbers had to be turned on at this point.

They were very easy to maintain in my DWC setup, very happy with the ease that these babies put me through.

After going to 12/12 sex showed in about 12 days, had 2 girls and tossed the other 3 males. Lots of resin on these - started showing up around day 18!

All in all I liked this strain - very "crystally" with resin. Yield was 1.5oz off the first plant and 1oz off number 2, not bad for 150w.

Smoke was smooth - nice relaxing high, kinda heady.

The Grow
This is my second Ice plant grown, the first was male. It was an extremely vigorous strain. I used Sams Choice soil with a 40% mix of perlite. During veg I used Miracle Grow AP 15-30-15. She was vegged with 100 watts of CF's for 5 weeks and 13" at which point she showed female pre flowers and I set her up with 400W HPS all for herself. After 14 days of flower she was stretched up to 32" and her flowers had formed. I used Sam's choice Deep feeding 10-52-10 for the first 3 weeks and Shultz Expert Gardener 10-60-10 for the remainder of flower. She had no smell during veg. She did not smell in flower until the last week during the flush when all I could smell was a mango scent. Throughout the grow temps ranged from 62F - 89F and humidity from 30%-60%.

The Harvest
Her last day of 12/12 was the 45th day into flower and she was 38" tall. She sat in 24 hrs of darkness and was harvested on her 46th day. I removed all of the branches and manicured them. They were hung to dry in my closet with a fan and a couple of ONA blocks. After 4 days she was then re manicured and put into a tin container. Her scent has become less fruity and more like a real tangy kind of smell. This phenotype smells NOTHING like ganja at all. No one could get over just holding the buds up to their noses and inhaling its stench. Yield was 129 Grams off of this one plant after cure.

The Smoke Test
I had three people separately test the bud and I documented their impressions so I could give the best possible opinions of Nirvanas' Ice.

Smoker #1 is a chronic smoker and has been most of his life. He usually smokes the best in town, and could not stop drooling over this. He rates it as one of his top 3 smokes of his life. Causes munchies.
Taste = 8
Smell = 10
High = 7

Smoker #2 is another "pothead" :) and while not as excited as smoker #1 definitely thinks it is incredibly good smoke.
Taste = 8
Smell = 10
High = 9

Smoker #3 is in love with Ice. She thinks that it smells like cucumber skin. Causes munchies.
Taste = 9

In Review
The only sad thing was that I was not prepared to clone as this was definitely the mother plant I have dreamed of. I will be growing this again and praying this phenotype visit my garden once more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this plant! I am re-growing it right now. Don't let my numbers fool you, I think I may have messed up somewhere with the hydro solution. It isn't the plant's fault, even though I wish there was no Ruderalis in the strain (causes early flowering), I wanted to veg my plant for a bit longer and see if I could get a more pleasing yield.

The trichomes cover everything and shimmer in the light, the smell is definitely pleasing but hard to describe or put a finger on. The main intense smells come from the buds actually being broken into bits. Low odor was a major issue with my setup and I'm glad I got a plant that doesn't make the whole house smell like growing pot (already smells like smoked pot).

Five seeds germinated out of six, in 3 days, directly in soil.
They stayed for a week under 54w of fluoros and then for other three weeks under 250w of HPS.
All the plants grew very fast with a lot of side branches and just one showed a bit of yellowing; they need quite a lot of nitrogen during vegging and preflowering, little pots can cause problems.

After the preflowers the females were four, but absolutely I hadn't the space to grow more than three plants, so one was gave to a friend.

Despite the reduced distance between the lamp and the plants, I had a consistent stretching in preflowering, passing from 30 cm to one meter. I had two plants with a more indica pheno and one kind of 50/50. Neither a little problem during flowering, they started ripening very soon and I harvested after 53 days from the switch to 12/12.
In that period I used the 250w HPS plus 36w of fluoros.

I fed with a generic fertilizer (NPK: 10-5-5+Fe) during vegging and preflowering, Canna Terra Flores (2-2-4) after the first flowers, PK 13-14 in middle flowering and GHE Ripen as end bloom booster (it made the buds much bigger and dense!).
I gave Plagroon Roots too, after transplants.

The pots were 1,5 litres for seedling, 6 l after 2 weeks (a bit too late!) and 12 l after the sexing to the end. German pro soil + worms humus + expanded clay.

The final result is 125 grams of top quality buds and 30 g of trims and microbuds (used to make a great hashish!).

The stone is quite balanced for the two more indica plants: it's very heady at the beginning but after a quarter of hour you realize that stand up from the sofa is so hard...
The third plant, less indica than the others, was the worst yielder and it's more sweet and candy-like... It's also a bit less destructive, so I can even smoke it in the morning!

Yes, because talking about ICE you can say it has a strong and nice smell, a not so bad flavour, but what everybody would say after a joint is that this is one of the most potent strain in commerce! All of my friends are amazed from ICE...

I grew my ICE from seeds (3 plants totally) and vegged them with 18/6 hours of light/dark for 2 weeks
I transplanted on the 13th day and till that day I used 3 x 17W fluoro lamps
The day I transplanted I put them under a 400w HPS Son-T-Agro from Philips and the next day I put them on 12/12 hours of light/dark
No ferts on veg
On flowering I fed them with seaweed extract and flowering boost, both from Sensi every second time of watering
I started with 1/3 of dosage and I increased each time till the suggested dosage
I let them flower for 8 weeks and 2 days because I wanted the effect to be up high and so it was.
Trichromes were about 30% amber and the most of the rest cloudy
Yield was a about 25g from each plant
Finally the effect was very up high with some couchlock after many hits but the head high was still very strong

This was my first grow, I only germinated one Ice seed (along with a few other seeds of other strains). It sprouted and turned out to be female (my only one actually). I cared for this plant well because she was all I had left. I was on a slight time constraint so I only vegged for a little under 4 weeks. She started showing sex around a week into flower.

I used LST at the beginning of flower to try and mazimize yield, it worked extremely well! Many budsites formed, but they start to grow around mid-way into flowering. The crystals start coming up around week 5 in flowering, but they slowly form all over the plant and it looked wonderful! By the end of flowering the plant was absolutely covered in trichs and resin!

The pistils were still only around 40% red, but the trichomes were mostly cloudy and I harvested on day 55 of flower. She didn't smell much at all during flower, only when disturbed. She has a citrus-y, fruity smell, but it becomes more perfumy after harvest. She was a bit hard to handle with the nutes, the leaves would curl up when I ferted but she still showed signs of deficiencies, but it wasn't a big problem I used Fox Farms soil and ferts and they worked nicely. I ferted every watering, but this was only around once a week, then up to once every 4 days in late flowering.

I don't know the exact yield because I do'nt have a scale, but because of the LST she made many budsites and I think the yield was around 2.3 ounces total. The buds aren't dense at all though, quite fluffy but I don't mind this, they smoke extremely well! The smell, taste, and high are all superb and they're much better than the top notch stuff we buy here. I'd recommend this plant to anyone who likes theyr buds covered in trichs! Easy on the nutes though, and I'd recommend to use LST, this strain responds well to it. The high is more couchlock than I'd hoped for, but I still like it a lot. Puts you in a happy mood after just a couple of hits, then it slowly brings you down over an hour and it ends up making you a couch potato for the second hour.

VEG: I started 7 plants total, and ended up with 4 females. All the plants were similar in structure. Very branch and somewhat short. I used fish emulsion once a week for veg. They smelled very skunky during veg.

Flower: Flowering these plants was easy. I used Fox Farm Big Bloom for bloom. These plants flowered very quickly and packed on the trichomes. These plants were so frosty, and had 2 plants turn purple from cold temps. The skunky odor went away when flowering started, and plants were pretty much undetectable. I loved growing these plants, they were easy, uniform, and very frosty.

Yield: My yield was very low. I only got about 2.5 ounces off 4 plants, I used a 400watt MH for the whole grow. The bulb was about a year and a half old, so that may have something to do with it. It certainly wasn't the plants, they had great potential.

Smoke: The smoke is great. It is a great day time high. It has a little head in it and a little body. Both are pretty intense feelings, and a lot of tingling in the body. Very obvious that you are stoned after smoking a bowl.

Planted seeds 10 seeds, lost 7 due to soil buggers.

Tossed out 1 male so 2 females were kept.

They grew out quite fast, had some troubles with nutes: they went from gimme more to a serious burn..

Plants were grown in soil and scrogged: good leaf to bud ratio and all the leaves were covered in trichs: excellent icehash.

Doing a second run with this strain from clones in DWC now: same as 1st grow but allot faster and better results.

This strain can be quite a nutehog i noticed.

Be sure to give it enough N during veg and the 1st weeks of flowering aor your gonna experience leaves yellowing/dropping in week 5-6 of 12/12

I started these 3 plants, dubbed the ICE Girls, directly into flower from seedlings at about 6-7".

I had 4 of 6 beans show female in 5 days of 12/12. I used GH Flora nutes at 5ml/10ml/15ml per gallon. Spider mites attacked at 2 weeks, I put in a No Pest Strip and raised RH to 70%. Mites were gone, but the high RH caused 1 top to get feathery mildew by week 7 and a small portion (2"-3") of the infected cola was removed early. By day 54 1 plant was totally ambered and I decided to harvest. The sativa natured tops were easy to trim and the density yielded way more than expected.
