Breeder's Description - 'Afghan'
|
Originally this strain was imported from Afghanistan and selectively bred in Holland for indoor cultivation. Afghan has a strong acrid aroma. Greasy resin glands extend to the fat shade leaves. The smoke is heavy with a strong almost numbing buzz if raised and cured properly. This plant has a high flower to leaf ratio and good yield. Afghan is one of the original genetic lines used in many popular modern day hybrids.

This strain produces quite nicely, especially in a SCROG application... I would recommend it to anyone wanting an easy to grow, nice yielding plant.

I have grown this strain in a natural (untopped), and a SCROG setup. Both using bubblers systems. Also, both under a 400w HPS. Garden size was 4 feet long x 2.5 feet deep x 8 feet tall. The un-topped plants yielded 3.6 oz. and the SCROG plants yeilded 6 oz. Both are dry weight using 2 plants each time.

Very good strain. Pretty much easy to grow. I didn't use much fert throughout the grow and the plant seemed to cope. After drying and harvesting for one week then curing for another week the buds were strong and sweet. After a few months they were very, very strong! The longer the better in my case! Excellent allrounder and a very quick flowerer, which helps.

This was excellent weed, short, squatty, easy to grow plants. Smell was strong and pungent, taste was amazing. The plant do not appear to be very remarkable at first, look like bagseed, but they behave very well indoors and usually show sex at approx 4-5 internodes. I have never had a herm and I have had probably 40 total. Easy to clone and very hardy and resilient. Easy to regenerate if you leave a few leaves on and switch the light back to veg. The taste is a very unique greasy chemical taste that coats your mouth and throat, the high is a typical heavy Indica high but a pleasure nonetheless.
I germinated all 10 seeds in a 50/50 mix of vermiculite and perlite in a plastic Solo cup, at a depth of 1/4 inch. At day 4, I had 8 out of 10 seeds up and that was it. The seedlings grew well and I transplanted them into the full sized containers with lava rock media.

Very easy plant to grow in soil. didn't like hydro nearly as much as other varieties(sensitive to overfert).
Hashy taste without the cough. Too much couchlock for me but my wife just loved it! Mould resistant and not as tough as other indicas to clone. Very vigourous growth.
I have grown this strain in soil(5 gallon buckets of bog mix for 2 months of veg and two months of flowering) and in hydro(NFT in 4 inch square fenceposts for one month veg and two months of flower.
Do not put afghani in the same hydro setup as other strains as it was unable to use as much nutes as the other strains I grew that cycle(Bogglegum and Nirvana skunk)

I used Bog soil mix (Sam’s pride potting soil mixed with perlite, bone meal, and blood meal) in 5 gallon buckets. The bog mix is very airy and I jar tested the Sam’s pride and it was 50% compost with very little sand or clay content(I have had bug problems in the past from it though but its worth it). Veg for two months and flower for two months also. Fish emulsion for veg and Foxfarm BigBloom for flowering(fertilized every other week in veg and bloom). One week flush. Watered 2/3's from above with filtered water and 1/3 from below(amount of water for the top feed depends on the demand according to a soil moisture meter 4 inches into the soil).
Hydro setup:
NFT in four inch square PVC fenceposts.
Foxfarm growbig(problematic) for veg.
For bloom I used Pure Blend Pro with supplementation of Acadie seaweed extract (I highly recommend this fertilizer for soil and for hydro) given every other week alternated with nitrozyme (didn't notice much effect from this). Cannazyme used once(it cleaned the roots some but not as effective as spraying the roots with water from a spray bottle).
I do not own a scale so I could not measure the yield per crop or per plant but this yielded as much bud as skunk#1 with denser buds that had less stretch.
For both setups I used a 1/4 hp squirrel cage fan that I looted off of an old furnace by the side of the road and a store-bought 600w light with a sungro reflector from sunlight supply. The space used was different for multiple crops as I moved but averaged 1.5x1.0 metres. Mylar spaceblankets from the buck or two store were used for light conservation. Uvonair placed in the basement(where all the air was vented to) and pine sol in a glass on top of the reflector were all that was necessary for odor control.

Of 12 seeds, I had one that was female. I grew it outside in FULL sun, in Central Ontario, Canada.
Big dark fan leaves were classic of this original Indica strain.
Beautiful full buds, (mine had purple flowers from the lower temperature outside)
I grew with organic ferts, not much at that, and the yield reflected this.
Very very drought resistant, clones easily (I had 100% success rate) stalks like a TREE!
Potency was crap at first, but after three weeks of curing, they were decent indeed! Only got better as the weeks went by.
Everyone that smoked it loved it, and when I told people it was Afghani, they all said the same thing "Ahhh, I knew I recognized that high", none of them knew what the Indica flavor and high were all about. This is the REAL DEAL as far as the genuine Indica hash plants go... next season I’ll make hash and oil for sure.
CONS:
I had a serious drying issue. It took my single plant FIVE, yes FIVE weeks to show any signs of drying. The temperature was a steady 70-75 degrees with 45% humidity. I was very disappointed because I lost about a quarter of the buds to mold because of this.
Was my first grow, I had some bagseed going as well, but the Afghani outperformed the others at every turn. My final bud count was 45 grams dried buds. It is what it is, an original "KING of Cannabis"

Outdoor I dig 2 feet wide, 4 feet down and back-fill 6 inches from the top with PRO-MIX (special formula from the 80's someone gave me, it's nothing special) fed with PureBlend-PRO vegetative and PureBlend- Metabolic Bloom Formula mixed with a gallon of water for each plant. Started flowering about halfway through August, and was harvested October 10th. All my plants are given uncompromised FULL sun.

Germination
------------
Seedlings were germinated using the damp paper towel and ziplock bag method. I placed the bag on top of my computer monitor and 9 seedlings had cracked within 3 days. 1 seed failed to germinate. 1 seedling died before reaching a few days old.
Vegative Growth
----------------
It was very slow at first, very little growth between days 7 and 14 before I repotted (they weren't actually rootbound) and they hit their growth spurt. Vegged with half doses of Canna Terra Nutes each week. After 34 days most plants had only just hit 8 inches. I decided the flip into flower early, only 1 of the plants was alternating at each node.
Flowering/Harvest
------------------
I immediately started weekly half strength doses of canna terra nutes. My bushiest plant turned hermie during the 2nd week of flowering, leaving 3 females.Plants continued stretching for around 34 days of the 51 day flowering period. The plants tripled in height to reach heights of around 22-24 inches. Around this time the plants developed a serious nitrogen deficiency due to underferting. I watered with epsom salts and full strength canna flores nutes and the yellowing stopped. I continued a full strength weekly does of canna flores until the last week before harvest. I then gave another does of canna flores as more leaves were yellowing. I allowed the roots to take up nutes for 5 hours before a full flush.
3 days later I turned the lights out for a 28 hour dark period before cutting and hanging upside down overnight in the growbox. Trichs were 30-40% cloudy for a less couchlocky high. The next day I manicured the buds and laid them on newspaper to dry for 5 days at around 75F and 45% Humidity with a small oscilating fan circulating air in the room. I then placed 35.7g of dry buds in a 0.75 litre mason jar and began curing, airing out twice a day for between 30-60 minutes.
The Smoke
----------
I took one small lower bud and ground it up before rolling a very small joint (half roach, half bud). The bud had wonderful lemony orange aromas with the musky undertone of hash. I proceeded to take 6 or 7 light puffs (smooth provided you aren't taking huge hits) and the smoke tasted fairly sweet, almost like sweet oranges, before dying away as the smoke glides down your into your lungs.
I then felt something creamy on my lips. I looked at the roach of my joint and it was covered in oily brown resin and so were my lips. I then decided to wait and see how the high was before I smoked any more.
The High
---------
A great body high with a fairly clear head. Sensations are stronger, I feel more creative, more relaxed, warm all over. Memories are stronger and there are regular bouts of the munchies. The high peaked around 1 hour and trailed off during the next couple of hours.
Conclusion
-----------
A great strain to learn growing on, very forgiving (I underferted hugely and still got an acceptable (for a first attempt) yield of 35.7g. A pleasant smoke an a great high all round.

My first grow was conducted in a 28x20x244" wardrobe under 250W HPS lighting with a 125cfm inline centrifugal fan and home made carbon scrubber.
I used 3,6 and 8 inch pots of john innes compost mixed with 30% perlite. I watered every 3-4 days, with water straight from the tap, using the pot weight method until water drained from the pots.
I ferted conservatively with Canna Terra Nutes. Temperatures ranged from 70-87F and humidity varied due to me sleeping in the same room as the growbox. I used 18/6 and 12/12 light cylces with 28 hours darkness before harvest.

July, 2002 |
I finally dug up my old pics of my first grow. It was Afghan from Nirvana. I of course was a noob, and this is what I did. Started 2 seeds in paper towel and got 100% germ. Went on to using a lava lamp light bulb for the first week of veg. Needless to say I didn't get much growth. Then moved on to my friends house and used 2 old old OLD 40 watt fluoros, without reflectors, so I really had about 30 watts max of actual light reaching them.
They vegged slowly of course, and my friend was on water duty, I knew how to water properly, and instructed him, but of course he wanted the best looking one to grow the fastest, and over watered it, causing death.
So I was down to 1 plant, unknown sex. It vegged for 5 weeks under 30 watts, had its share of trouble, and grew slowly and unhealthily.
Then came time when we saved enough money to buy our 70 watt hps from home depot. Moved it back to the parents house and set up a nice little flower chamber. Those pics are gone for good, they were uploaded on the cannabis.com forums, but were deleted. Once flowering starter, it took off. with the proper light and temperature and all that, it grew very fast and vigorous. Thank god it turned out female about a week in. Now that she was doubled in size in nearly 2 weeks, the leaves were a dark beautiful green, healthy and strong, always at a 45 degree angle. As a noob I didn't use a timer, so flowering time was lengthened by light stress. I also ended up with some male bananas, which in turn helped me learn the capability of female seeds first hand.
I yielded 60 grams out of the fresh 70 watt hps and 2 40 watt brand new fluoros, it took more time then usual, but eventually it got there.
This plant was very resistant to abuse. Wrong lights, low wattage, neglect, over watering, and no veg nutes at all. Only used liquid bloom high P fertz 3 week of flowering, and stopped after the 5th.
Afghan made such a comeback that I recommend this as one of the best first time grows, even without the help of OG I made it okay.
On another note, some of my dried weed was in a RubberMaid from the attic (it had mites in it somehow) ended up getting eaten from the inside out, and I lost roughly half of that 60 gram yield to them. made some hash tho.*shivers* Great strain, good job Nirvana.

Used unknown soil, had perlite without nutes. 70 watt hps garage light, aluminum foil reflector, aluminum on 2 walls, white paint and Styrofoam on other 2. 2 40 watt fluoros on 1 side vertical. Grow area wasn't sealed off at all, just enough so light wouldn’t leak in during dark times. fertz were 1 chem bloom fert, 15-30-15 I believe, for 3 weeks during flowering. was aprox 3 square feet, more then enough for 1 plant. watered when soil was dry one inch down, got used to weight of pot after a while.
